End the Dog and Cat Meat Trade: Save Millions of Companion Animals

Humane World for Animals, a global leader in animal protection, is committed to ending the dog and cat meat trade, a cruel and unnecessary industry that kills millions of animals every year in Asia. Dogs and cats endure unspeakable suffering—crammed into trucks for days, starved, beaten, or hanged, and ultimately slaughtered in brutal and inhumane conditions. Many are stolen pets or street dogs, taken from their homes and communities, facing unimaginable trauma before their deaths.

Across Asia, an estimated 30 million dogs and 10 million cats are killed annually for human consumption. Humane World for Animals works on the ground in South Korea, China, Indonesia, Viet Nam, and India, employing a multi-layered strategy to rescue animals, advocate for stronger laws, and educate communities about the cruelty of the trade. In South Korea alone, we have rescued over 2,500 dogs from meat farms and markets, providing medical care, safe transport, and permanent homes in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and the Netherlands.

We also work with local law enforcement to stop traffickers, close slaughterhouses, and support workers in transitioning to humane livelihoods. Our advocacy efforts have achieved landmark victories, including a nationwide ban on the dog meat industry in South Korea to take effect in 2027, and more than 50 local bans in Indonesia. Through public awareness campaigns, investigations, and policy work, we are shining a light on the trade, changing hearts and minds, and building momentum to end this cruelty once and for all.
