Earlier this fall, our Animal Rescue Team deployed to Bethel, Alaska, to support Bethel Friends of Canines (BF Canine) after devastating floods caused by Typhoon Halong. In normal times, Bethel’s only animal shelter is run by two full-time staff members, rotating volunteers, and a contract veterinarian. For 10 years, our Pets for Life program has partnered with BF Canine to bring veterinary and wellness services to the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta communities of southwest Alaska.
When disaster strikes, our Animal Rescue Team is on the ground, delivering lifesaving care and critical supplies to animals and the communities that love them. The team has responded to disasters worldwide—working alongside local responders to reach the hardest-hit areas and fill critical resource gaps.
Humane World for Animals operates rescue teams, community outreach programs, sanctuaries, and care centers that directly assist tens of thousands of animals each year. From natural disasters to cruelty cases, we respond to crises and save lives—because every animal matters.
The remnants of Typhoon Halong destroyed an estimated 90% of structures in the village of Kipnuk and caused widespread flooding throughout the region, displacing approximately 1,500 people. With Bethel serving as a central hub for relief efforts—accessible only by small planes or river routes—rescuing and caring for animals was an immense logistical challenge.
When BF Canine reached out for help after receiving an influx of displaced dogs, our team immediately mobilized. We helped fund emergency charter flights, deliver food, crates, collars, and bowls, and provide on-site shelter support. The team searched for and rescued dogs who had been washed downriver, reunited animals with their families, and helped manage daily shelter operations—from intake and microchipping to veterinary care and transport planning.
Over the course of the deployment, our responders faced freezing temperatures and snow as they worked tirelessly to ensure that no animal was left behind. The shelter ultimately cared for more than 170 dogs, reuniting most with their families and preparing others for foster or adoption placement.
In November, Humane World for Animals provided a $100,000 grant to Bethel Friends of Canines to help sustain their recovery work and continue supporting the affected communities.
At the heart of our disaster response is the belief that the well-being of people is closely tied to the well-being of animals. In moments of crisis, that connection becomes even more vital. Everyone deserves the resources and support to care for their animals—in good times and in bad.
Together, we’re helping Alaska’s communities recover and ensuring that animals have the care, safety, and compassion they deserve.
