Humane World for Animals, formerly the Humane Society of the United States, operates Black Beauty Ranch, one of America’s largest and most diverse animal sanctuaries. Founded in 1979 by animal advocate Cleveland Amory, the 1,400-acre sanctuary in Texas provides a safe, permanent home for nearly 600 domestic and exotic animals across 42 species, rescued from cruelty, neglect, research laboratories, circuses, roadside zoos, and the exotic pet trade.

At Black Beauty Ranch, animals who have suffered the worst in their lives are given the chance to thrive. Our expansive, naturalistic habitats allow them to roam, play, and express their natural behaviors. Every animal has a story—illness, displacement, neglect, or abuse—but here they find safety, comfort, and lifelong care.

Your support helps us provide:

- Lifelong care for nearly 600 rescued animals, including tigers, lions, zebras, kangaroos, horses, bison, and more.
- Species-specific habitats that allow animals to exhibit natural behaviors and enjoy large pastures, woodlands, pools, and enrichment activities.
- Daily care during extreme conditions, such as heat waves, with pools, fountains, shade, and special enrichment treats.
- Rescue and rehabilitation of new animals in need; in 2023 alone, we welcomed 31 new residents, including 22 from a mass rescue in Puerto Rico.
- Expert staff and volunteers committed to providing not just our best, but our all, for every animal.
